Tatsugoro Iwata came to America about 1905-1906 and began farming flowers in Arcadia and doing gardening jobs. He would carry the cut flowers in a large container and take them by streetcar to downtown Los Angeles to sell them as a street vendor, and later at the flower market.
Tatsugoro married Hatsu Ohno in 1912. They had four children, Jean Harue who married Roy Ishida, Tatsumi who married Tsugi Hagiwara, Tadao who married Sakuye Kay Kamo and Toshio who married Jean Akiko Hamano.
The family grew various flowers such as ranunculus, tuberose and daisies in East Whittier, which was known as “Blue Hills” at that time, now La Mirada. They leased land from the Edwin Neff and Rand McNally family. Edwin Wallace Neff was a famous architect and there is a Neff High School named after their family. When the war broke out, Mr. Neff told the family that they could return afterwards to resume their farming.
After being incarcerated at the Rohwer internment camp in Arkansas, the family eventually all returned to California. Mr. Neff kept his promise and let them resume farming. The Iwata family had $3,000 to their name to begin a new start. Tatsugoro had the foresight to keep tiny Caspia seeds (a purple filler-type of flower) and propagated them. Theirs was the only farm to grow such flowers and they made a very successful business which allowed them to buy property in 1949. They purchased 20 acres in Buena Park at Knott and Lincoln Avenues where they grew chrysanthemums and daisies. The later acquired another 10 acres and grew 3 acres of strawberries.
The Iwata Brothers stopped farming in 1975 and relocated to Cypress and Anaheim in 1975. The property is currently leased to a mobile home park and commercial shopping center at the Buena Park location.
The Sansei, Yonsei and Gosei generations are forever grateful to our ancestors for establishing the groundwork and persevering on our behalf for a better future.
